Born Priscilla Campogan - Cabase on August 10, 1926 in Tuburan, Cebu.
Sheila was still a young girl when her mother died at an early age from
a congenital heart problem. Having a busy father, Sheila helped raise
herself and her younger sister, Charito and her brother Eddie, the youngest.
Music was one of her passions and she played the classics on the piano very
well. It was also her passion in music that led her to meet her first
boyfriend, then the bobby soxer's idol in the 40's named Mane' Cabase who toured
with the very popular big band that included some of the top musicians of
the Visayas, including his brothers Siux "Tikoy" Cabase and Narding Cabase.
Sheila married Manuel "Mane" Cabase on Valentine's Day of 1944 when she
was just in her teens. The New Mrs. Cabase never really lived life as a
normal teenager and instead gave birth to her daughter named after the
favorite song of the season - "Amapola".
Becoming busy with her family, Sheila abandoned her classical piano
career and focused her time on her talented family, supporting them all the
way and often seen backstage or in their audience. Although musically trained
by Mahnee, it was Sheila who trained her daughter early, chose wardrobe
and responsible for the repertoire of songs that her daughter performed.
One of the feathers in her cap was a contract with the opera house when her
daughter was barely 14 years of age.
Proof of Sheila's hand in her husband's and daughter's successes were
seen by many as Manny Cabase and Amapola Cabase garnered many plaudits and
awards in their respective musical careers with performances to audiences all
over the world.
Sheila graduated college from the University of San Carlos in Cebu
City. She majored in English with Mathematics as her backup. Later she
became a faculty member at the University of San Carlos and also at the
University of the Visayas teaching English and Mathematics for high school and later
for college students.
Sheila wrote poems during her spare time and enjoyed working alongside
Manny writing lyrics to many his compositions ( Nahigwa-os & Unya Nahanaw Ka,
among others). From time to time Sheila also took pleasure in
conducting the Friends, U.S.A. choir that she and her husband organized in the Bay
Area.
She wrote a beautiful poem entitled "True Love" that was read by her
daughter Weenna during Manny Cabase's eulogy, January 3, 2004 at the
St. Patrick's church in San Francisco the poem will be handed out during
the service at Duggan's Mortuary, Sunday, January 25, from 2:00PM to
9:00PM.
Sheila's favorite quote..."Love is a matter of Geography"
